PHILANTHROPIST:

There are many forms of Heroes. Some are dedicated to saving lives, some are ready to help when the opportunity arises. Our service men and women are heroes no less. The Hero we are talking about here gave her life savings so others would benefit from her goodwill and consideration of mankind.

Ms. Myra Stone Brockette died at the age of 93, leaving all of her hard earned savings to Christ&s Haven for Children, Near Keller Texas. She began her savings on Aug. 17, 1920. Her first bank deposit was $1.06. She continued her savings methodically for the next 80 years. After a lifetime of scrimping and saving, working at a dime store and then as a secretary for a state agency, she left behind a will of fewer than 100 words and a legacy that will not soon be forgotten. At her death in April 2004 her savings amounted to more than $1.5 million. She left it all to pay for the college education of children who, like her, had difficult childhoods. Myra graduated from Diamond Hills High School and took classes at what is now TWU (Texas Women&s University) until she had to drop out because she did not have tuition money. Mr. C.F. Kelly the executor of her estate and a friend since 1940, said the driving force behind her wanting to provide finance for the children at Christ&s Haven was because of her own difficulty in finishing college because of finance.

Ms. Brockette was very much acquainted with hard times, she like many her age, lived through the depression, but did not let that stop her from thinking of others. Myra's sacrifice is very much a Heroic jesture, for by her diligence and good heartedness she has enabled the lives of others to have a better chance in society. Citizens Memorial and the entire Community salute her for her Philanthropy and Heroic endeavour!
